Biography

WonderBuhle is a Durban-based visual artist from Kwa-Ngcolosi, a village steeped in tradition and still governed by a chief. His artistic journey began at the age of nine, nurtured by childhood curiosity and his mother’s encouragement. As a child, he would play with charcoal from the fire, sketching stick figures on the walls of his home—an early spark that would later evolve into a dedicated career.

He received his first formal training through the BAT Centre Artists in Residency (AIR) Program and later honed his skills in fine art through the Velobala apprenticeship program at Durban University of Technology, under the mentorship of Themba Shibase.

In 2018, WonderBuhle held his first solo exhibition at the Durban Art Gallery. His work has since been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including at Unit (London, 2020), The Art House (Wakefield, 2018), Michaelis Gallery (Cape Town, 2017), KZNSA (Durban, 2015), and the African Art Centre (Durban, 2014). He was awarded the Bremer Kunststipendium Art Grant in 2016, completing a three-month residency, and in 2020, he participated in the La Brea Studio Artists Residency in Los Angeles.
